Introduction to Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDtact)

Description
[This course will take you about 1hr 30mins to complete.]

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders, also called FASDs for short, cover a range of disorders caused by the exposure of a foetus (an unborn baby in the womb) to alcohol consumed by the mother when pregnant. The alcohol affects the development of the foetus and can cause a range of long-term physical, mental, behavioural and learning difficulties. Though FASDs are more common than autism spectrum disorder, there is a lack of awareness, and so it is believed that they are often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

It is likely that a large number of children in care are affected by FASDs. It may be a disorder that you encounter with your foster child and it is important for you to know how to support them.

In this course, you will learn:
- What FASDs are.
- How common they are.
- What the symptoms of FASDs are.
- The range of disorders on the spectrum.
- How FASDs are diagnosed.
- How to treat FASDs.
- How you can support your foster child.
